Lake Gnotuk is a scientifically unique crater lake, located in the volcanically rich Camperdown region of south-eastern Australia.

The purpose of this site is to consolidate resources relating to Lake Gnotuk and its local geography, in order to promote understanding of this natural treasure.

From October 1st through November 13th, the Geelong Gallery will present:

Lake Gnotuk: A Layered History

The show, curated by Anna Clabburn, features new work from five contemporary artists, 'that explores the historical, geological and indigenous stories surrounding the unique and scientifically renowned environment of Lake Gnotuk in Western Victoria.'

The exhibition also features historical works by Eugene von Guerard and Nicholas Chevalier.

Gnotuk Protected:


In 2005, lakes Gnotuk and Bullen Merri were granted permanent protection status from development. The area inside the craters and for 100m beyond the rims is now designated an Environmental Rural Zone and is covered by both Significant Landscape and Environmental Significance Overlays.
